My 14 year old son and I set out on this around noon. It was a cloudy day, with mild temperatures. The rain waited until we were just starting the trail and rained the entire loop.
The trailhead started in the parking lot of the ranger station/visitor center where we grabbed a topo map. The trail was decently marked but there were some areas where we needed to consult the map or head off in the wrong direction. (get or bring a map).
The trail was mildly rugged, boots are strongly suggested for ankle support and protection. The last two miles of the loop back are tricky and not marked well beginning at the switchbacks.
Very nice view, nice historical sites, intermediate trail, I dont recommend small children at all. We crunched it out in 4 hours only carrying minimal gear and two brief stops of 10 or less min.
Theres alot to see, I'll hike it again.
