Overzicht: If you are looking for a unique shopping experience while in Amsterdam, de Negen Straatjes (the Nine Little Streets) is the place to go. In the Nine Streets you will find specialty stores, boutique shops and high-end vendors housed in a wonderful mix of 17th, 18th and 19th century buildings.

The 200+ shops of the Nine Streets are located just a five-minute walk west of Dam Square in the western canal district, which is now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These streets have been home to shops since the 17th century when the merchant-class lived in grand canal houses. The cross streets connecting the canals became shopping streets providing food, clothing and furnishings for the wealthy canal-side residents.

This guide provides a mix of men's and women's clothing, shoes, ceramics, prints, specialty food shops and a wonderful canal-side cafe. The shops included are unique and independent. In some cases the goods are made or designed right in Amsterdam. Proprietors are on hand at many of the shops. Today these shops are under pressure from high-end vendors who are willing to pay high rents to occupy these unique shopping streets. Supporting the shops in this guide will not only provide you with unique goods, but also help support the spirit of the Nine Streets.

Tips: In this area most, but not all, shops accept major credit cards. You should have some cash on hand for those that don't.

Thursday night is shopping night in Amsterdam and the shops are open late. Most shops on this tour are open until 9pm Thursdays. Most shops open late—around 11am—so take this into account when planning your tour.

Note that if you're looking for classic Dutch kitsch (e.g., wooden shoes, tiny windmills, orange shirts, etc.) you won't find it in the Nine Streets. Damrak (the street between Dam Square and Central Station) and Leidsestraat (near the Leidseplein entertainment area) are the best places for souvenir items.

There is even a section for children. If you look hard enough you will find a hidden gem. It's likely you will purchase from Laura herself, who has owned this store for 25 years.

Your walk to the next shop will take you along the Herengracht, which was the most prestigious canal in the 17th century. As you walk north look to your right across the canal to see some excellent examples of 17th and 18th century Amsterdam canal-side architecture. Notice the heavy lean to the corner house at No. 275. A few doors down at No. 269 you will see a house built in 1656 with a step gable typical of that era.

Het Kleikollektief

This small shop on Hartenstraat is easy to miss. It is, however, a real gem. Inside rows of shelves are stacked with colorful handmade clay creations. Alongside the shelves are workbenches for the ceramic artists who work right alongside the shoppers. The owners/ceramicists are Klaartje Kamermans and Corien Ridderkhoff. When you visit the shop you are likely to find one or both of them working away. Notice the gas-fired kiln at the back of the shop.

Hartenkaas sandwich shop

If all this shopping has made you hungry, the final stop is the place for you. Outside the Hartenkaas sandwich shop is a hand-written sign that boasts "The best sandwiches of Amsterdam!"—and they may be right.

The ambiance of the interior leaves a lot to be desired, but don't let that deter you from trying one of the delicious sandwiches. There are dozens to choose from, all costing just €4.50. If the weather permits, get it "to go" and find a bench on the nearby Prinsengracht canal to watch the boats and pedestrians meander by.
